OZONE COMMUNITY MENTOR (OCM) Program

(To see photos from the OCM's Junior LIT program this summer please view our Ozark For All album on our Photos page.)

The OCM program is designed to encourage high school students to participate in one of the many service opportunities that exist not only within Ozone, but throughout the local community. Service can be done in many ways: within the body as well as outside; both through actions and prayer. Ozone Ministries has partnered with several different organizations to give students a broad range of service opportunities such as assisting in coaching a youth sports team, providing after-school tutoring and/or being a mentor. We want to provide you with opportunities to serve your local community.

OPPORTUNITIES:

Coach

Coaching is an opportunity for high school students to teach skills of a sport as well as to build relationships with elementary aged kids.

Commitment: at least one practice or game per week during the season

Time: varies by team, normally one week day and/or weekend day

Location: Westchester Academy, Meadow Wood, Thornwood, Spring Branch Education Center

Expectations: Coaching volunteers are expected to attend at least one game OR practice per week. Volunteer coaches are not expected to attend all team events. While at practices or games, high school volunteers will be engaged by leading drills and working one on one with kids who need special attention or help. Coaches may be given responsibility to work with a small group of kids on their own while the head coach is working with a separate group. Coach’s main responsibility is to build relationships with team members by encouraging and teaching.

Training: no training required, must be registered with Family Point resources as a volunteer

Homework Help

Homework Help is an after school program designed to provide a structured atmosphere for students to work on homework, receive help from caring adults and focus on subjects and topics children need help in. The program is open to 4th and 5th graders and their siblings.

Time: 3-4:05pm Monday or Wednesday

Location: Meadow Wood Elementary or Thornwood Elementary

Expectations: Homework Help volunteers are expected to arrive as close to 3pm as possible and assist with 5th grade and below level homework, answering questions and making sure homework is completed. After homework is complete, volunteers will spend the remaining minutes playing games and socializing with the kids. High school volunteers will be assigned to a small group that includes 4 students and one adult volunteer. The greatest responsibility of the volunteer is to build relationships with the children they work with. High school volunteers will make their schedule at the beginning of each semester. If a high school volunteer cannot make it to a session they are scheduled for they must let the school coordinator know with as much advance notice as possible.

Middle School Ozone

Students interested in helping with Middle School Ozone may come to MDPC on any Tuesday from 6:45-8:00pm. Please be sure to let Ali Donelson or Josh Wren know ahead of time so that we may give you a responsibility for the night! Be sure to sign in when you get there!

Yellowstone Academy

Yellowstone Academy is a charter school located in Houston’s 5th ward. The school exists to provide kids with a better opportunity for education and success in life. Students involved with OCM serve as after school care volunteers and have the chance to help with homework and play with the kids once or twice a week.

The after-school program at Yellowstone provides students a supervised and structured place to go after school.  Many Yellowstone parents work long hours and are not able to be at home after the school day.  The after-school program allows students the opportunity to work on homework during the first period of the program and to get out and play during the second period.

Want to serve at Yellowstone? Volunteers are welcome to help Wednesdays after school from 4:00-5:15. you may either meet at Yellowstone Academy (3000 Trulley St. Houston, TX 77004) @ 4:00pm or meet at West U Methodist to carpool with an Ozone leader or friends @ 3:30pm.
